In the Archive's forbidden wing, a blank tome has begun narrating the head librarian's every movement one second before she makes it, and each page ends with the same elegant sentence: she dies when the tide bell rings at midnight. Her only defense is to become someone the book cannot predict.

Every sixty years, a librarian of Alanje requests catalogue number 4412. Every sixty years, one of them quietly 'retires.' Odalys just found the list — and the next name on it belongs to her apprentice.
- Part 3: Chapter One, Two Centuries Late

Two hundred years of readers, archivists, and sacrifices, and not one of them ever thought to write back. Odalys is inside the book now, stylus in hand, about to offer an unfinished story the one thing it has never tasted: a beginning.
